Royal Belum International Hornbill Expedition 2017

ECOMY is proud to announce that the Royal Belum International Hornbill Expedition 2017 will be organized from the 25th to 28th August, 2017.

This is an amazing opportunity to survey the worlds oldest rainforest (estimated to be over 130 million years old) for its hornbill population. The site is the new Royal Belum State Park, home to all 10 species of Malaysian hornbills and dubbed the ‘Hornbill Capital of the World’ by the Ecotourism & Conservation Society Malaysia (ECOMY). It is also designated an Important Bird Area (MY07).

International teams have been identified and invited to take part in this limited slot expedition, organised by Malaysia’s leading ecotourism NGO, ECOMY, in partnership with the Perak State Park Corporation, Northern Corridor Implementation Agency (NCIA) and Tourism Malaysia.

This unique event will mark the arrival of the migrating Plain-pouched Hornbills from their breeding grounds in Thailand. Numbers of birds sighted in previous years range between 100 to over 3,261 birds in one count!

There are 9 other resident species of which the survey also hopes to find and count. All data collected by this expedition will be used as part of an action plan and strategy to help the management of the park and to promote ecotourism as a sustainable activity for the area.
