Royal Belum International Hornbill Expedition 22-24 August 2025. Our signature annual event is back for our 10th official year.
Set amongst the lowland rainforest of Royal Belum State Park, Aman Jaya Forest Reserve, Temengor Forest Reserve and Temengor Lake, we will visit multiple sites to locate, observe, count and promote the sighting of possibly all 10 species of hornbills occurring in Malaysia, including the critically endangered Helmeted Hornbill (Rhinoplax vigil), regional migration of the vulnerable Plain-pouched Hornbills (Rhyticeros subruficollis).
The migration of Plain-pouched Hornbills into these areas, once recorded in the thousands, has declined in recent years due mainly to loss of habitat and other threats.
To promote ecotourism, local guides, birdwatching, and conservation, ECOMY has been organising this expedition to highlight this unique forest complex and push for the protection of the sites and their resources.
Registration will be open very soon to interested members of the public, but limited in numbers, and for invited guests from the birding community.
